How to flatten a warped Pokémon card
Why cards bend, what actually works to flatten them, and the humidity mistakes that make warping worse.

Warping is one of the most common, and most fixable, problems we see. A bowed card looks worse than it is, and often flattens beautifully with the right, patient approach.
Why cards warp
Cardboard reacts to moisture and uneven tension. Common causes:
- Humidity changes in storage
- One side sealed against plastic while the other breathes
- Heat exposure (a car, a windowsill, a radiator)
- Holo cards, which naturally bow because of the foil layer
What actually works
The reliable method is slow, even pressure combined with controlled conditions. The idea is to gently coax the fibres back to flat without shocking the card. Rushing it, heavy weight, sudden heat, or moisture, is what causes new dents and creases.
What to avoid at home
- Ironing or hot pressing. Heat lifts gloss and can bubble the surface.
- Soaking or steaming. Moisture swells the board and often makes warping permanent.
- Heavy books overnight. Uneven pressure creates flat spots and corner dents.
A note on holos
Holographic cards fight back, the foil wants to bow. Flattening them is possible but takes a gentler touch and more patience than a non-holo.
If your card is warped and you'd rather not gamble, we flatten and de-bend cards as part of every restoration, with photos before and after. Start an order and we'll assess it first.
